To celebrate Earth Day the students of Division 5 cleaned up the playground. We saved our garbage and used much of it to create our Trash Art Salmon. Sarah, our amazing DFO contact, borrowed our Trash Art to use for display at Rosewall Creek Hatchery’s open house ‘The River Never Sleeps’ this weekend.

It’s Not a Stick!

February 15, 2013 · 2 Comments · Art, Our Learning

Oh, my! This took a while but here is our collaborative effort with Mrs. Meyer’s K/Gr. 1 class based on the book Not a Stick by Antoinette Portis. The videographer was using a relatively new camera and unfortunately some of the clips are cut a little short; my apologies! Nevertheless, we had fun doing this project!

Photo Peach Technical Difficulties

January 4, 2013 · No Comments · Art, Our Community, Our Learning

Hi . . . . If anyone has tried to watch any of our Photo Peach slide shows made prior to mid December they will have had little success. Photo Peach has made a statement saying that, upon attempting to update their servers, they have encountered a glitch. I thought it would have been fixed by now but ‘no go’. Hopefully soon. Meanwhile the videos via You Tube and slide shows using ‘Slide Rocket’ are working just fine!

If you were at the concert, watch it again! Happy Holidays, everyone!

Inspired by the beautiful Gingerbread Village display sponsored by the Comox Valley Boys and Girls Club and hosted by Crown Isle Resort, we enjoyed our own Gingerbread Day. We chose to take on trees rather than three-dimensional structures and opted to eat our creations right away as opposed to putting them on display:)

Making our Westcoast Christmas Swags!

December 14, 2012 · No Comments · Art, Our Community, Our Learning

We are so fortunate to live and learn in the quaint Village of Cumberland where, in just over an hour, we can walk down to the forest to collect cedar boughs and stay for a game of Kick the Can! Mother Nature allowed us to enjoy our visit to the forest without extreme weather so we were able to collect enough beautiful Cedar boughs to make our Christmas swags. The morning following we enjoyed putting the branches together to make the swags and then used natural decorations, i.e. dehydrated oranges, cinnamon sticks and nuts, to finish them off. Thanks to Emma Graham for joining us on Wednesday and to Melissa Pay for helping us put the swags together on Thursday. Enjoy the show!

Learning About Blue Orchard Mason Bees

November 29, 2012 · 4 Comments · Art, Our Community, Our Learning

Several weeks ago I told a friend that my boys and girls were learning about B.C. Animal Habitats in Science at school. As her husband raises Blue Orchard Mason Bees in their yard, she kindly asked him if he would help my students build Mason Bee Boxes. Most of the boys and girls had never heard of ‘Mason Bees’ and I knew very little of them myself. Monday we studied up on these very helpful pollinators and today Christine and Jim Saunders came to class to help the boys and girls build their Mason Bee homes. A few things the students learned about Mason Bees … 1) They resemble Black Flies and are often not recognized as bees. 2) They are amazing pollinators! 3) They very rarely sting! If you would like to read more of what we learned about Mason Bees, please check out the following attachment.
