After weeks of practicing three times per week, several dedicated Cumberland Elementary students performed the traditional Maypole Dance at Empire Day’s on Victoria Day in front of a huge crowd. We had a very cool time visiting the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington. Our hosts were Gini and Ross and they taught the students a lot about the animals rehabilitating at the centre and the animals that are lifetime residents. A very interesting place to bring visitors this summer! We adopted a bald eagle at the centre. Following our visit at the centre we had lunch at Errington Community Park and shopped for a bit at Coombs Country Market. Thank you parents!

To celebrate Earth Day the students of Division 5 cleaned up the playground. We saved our garbage and used much of it to create our Trash Art Salmon. Sarah, our amazing DFO contact, borrowed our Trash Art to use for display at Rosewall Creek Hatchery’s open house ‘The River Never Sleeps’ this weekend.

Day 2 of Growing Chefs included examing, smelling and tasting some interesting vegetables and herbs with Chefs Patricia and Megan. The students were also introduced to Chef-Gardener Thierry Vrain of Innisfree Farms. Chef-Gardener Thierry has a great knowledge of soil and he shared with the students the importance of using good soil for a properous garden. He guided the students in planting a variety of peas which they took home to their gardents. The previous week the students rewrote the words from some popular nursery rhymes to include some of their favourite vegetables. Thank you chef-gardeners! Chef Vivian was sick this day and the students missed her

Releasing Our Salmon into Morrison Creek!
April 8, 2013 · No Comments · Our Community, Our Learning
On the last Friday before Spring Break our class went to Morrison Creek to release our Coho Salmon. We had raised our salmon from the Egg stage in January to late March when they had become Fry and were ready to meet the world! We had received 200 eggs from the Puntledge Hatchery; three of them didn’t hatch but the other 197 survived and thrived until our release date! Following releasing our salmon, we had a picnic lunch at Puntledge Park followed by bowling at Codes Lanes. Thanks for driving parents! Thanks for taking pics, Taryn!
